Wallachian Highlander Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852
Description:
This evocative nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Wallachyer uit het gebergte,” translated from Dutch as a Wallachian man from the mountains. The figure is shown wrapped in a heavy sheepskin cloak, wearing traditional regional attire associated with the historic region of Wallachia, one of the principal historical territories of modern-day Romania.
The print captures the rugged and romantic image of mountain life that fascinated European audiences during the nineteenth century. The sitter’s broad-brimmed hat, embroidered shirt, dark boots, and especially the large woolen or sheepskin outer garment reflect the practical dress traditions of shepherding and rural life in the colder upland regions of Eastern Europe. The dramatic cloak, rendered with remarkable texture through lithographic linework, dominates the composition and gives the figure a strong and memorable presence.
Throughout the nineteenth century, costume lithographs were widely collected for their blend of ethnographic curiosity and decorative elegance. Publishers produced series portraying the peoples and regional costumes of Europe and beyond, often emphasizing the picturesque and romantic qualities of local traditions. Wallachia and the Balkan regions were viewed by many Western Europeans as remote and culturally distinctive, making such imagery especially appealing to collectors and travelers interested in folk life and national costume.
The restrained hand-coloring beautifully complements the detailed lithographic technique, with warm earth tones contrasting against the black hat and boots while subtle reds and blues enliven the garments beneath the cloak. The wide margins and uncluttered background place full attention on the costume itself, enhancing the decorative impact of the print.
The print is an original antique lithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
