Tyrolean Hunter from the Ziller Valley Antique Costume Lithograph

Description:

This charming nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Tijroler uit het Ziller-dal,” translated from Dutch as a Tyrolean man from the Ziller Valley in Zillertal. The figure is shown in traditional Alpine costume, leaning casually upon a long hunting rifle while dressed in regional attire associated with the mountainous Tyrol region of the Austrian Alps.

The composition beautifully captures the romantic image of Alpine life that fascinated nineteenth-century European audiences. The tall black hat, broad white shirt, fitted trousers, decorative leg coverings, and dark cloak reflect traditional Tyrolean dress, while the rifle hints at hunting culture and rural mountain life. In the background, a small female figure carrying goods further evokes the atmosphere of daily life in the Alpine countryside.

During the nineteenth century, costume lithographs became highly popular among collectors and travelers interested in regional cultures and folk traditions. The Tyrol region, celebrated for its dramatic landscapes and distinctive costumes, was especially admired during the Romantic era. Prints such as this presented idealized yet informative portrayals of local inhabitants, combining ethnographic curiosity with decorative artistic appeal.

The hand-coloring remains particularly attractive, with restrained earthy tones accented by deep blues and reds that complement the elegant linework of the lithographic process. The large blank margins surrounding the figure emphasize the simplicity and refinement of the composition, making the print highly suitable for framing either individually or as part of a collection of European costume studies.

The print is an original antique lithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
