Russian Woman from Ukraine Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852

Description:

This elegant nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Russische Vrouw uit de Ukraine,” translated from Dutch as a Russian woman from Ukraine. The figure is portrayed in traditional rural dress beside a wooden well, holding a poised and dignified stance that reflects the romanticized ethnographic style popular in European costume illustration during the mid-nineteenth century.

The woman wears a flowing white blouse with voluminous sleeves, a richly patterned apron, layered skirt, and traditional jewelry, all delicately highlighted with hand-applied color. Her attire reflects the folk costume traditions of rural Eastern Europe, where embroidered textiles, woven aprons, and ornamental necklaces formed an important part of regional identity and ceremonial dress. The simple rural setting, including the well bucket and timber structure, adds narrative charm and reinforces the connection to village life and traditional customs.

Throughout the nineteenth century, publishers across Europe issued illustrated costume series portraying the peoples and dress traditions of different nations and regions. These prints combined artistic elegance with ethnographic curiosity, allowing viewers to explore the cultures of Europe and beyond from within their own homes. Ukraine and the wider eastern territories of the Russian Empire were often depicted through idealized rural imagery that emphasized traditional craftsmanship, agrarian life, and regional costume.

The lithographic technique provides fine linework and delicate textures, while the restrained hand-coloring enhances the warmth and decorative appeal of the composition. The large surrounding margins and uncluttered background draw full attention to the figure, making the print highly suitable for framing either individually or as part of a collection of antique costume studies.

The print is an original antique lithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
