Russian Peasant from the Moscow Region Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852

This charming nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Landman uit de omstreken van Moscou,” translated from Dutch as a countryman or peasant from the surroundings of Moscow. The figure is portrayed in traditional rural dress, leaning upon a walking staff while gazing confidently toward the viewer, offering a glimpse into village life in the Russian countryside during the nineteenth century.

The costume reflects the practical attire worn by rural inhabitants of central Russia. The peasant wears a loose white tunic, striped trousers, sturdy footwear, and a simple cap, while a dark blue cloak is draped casually over one shoulder. Such garments were designed for durability and comfort in the demanding agricultural environment of the Russian interior. In the background, a female figure dressed in traditional costume adds depth to the scene and reinforces the depiction of everyday rural life.

During the nineteenth century, European publishers produced extensive costume series documenting the peoples and traditional dress of different regions around the world. Russia, with its vast territory and diverse populations, attracted particular interest from Western European audiences. Costume prints such as this combined ethnographic observation with romantic artistic interpretation, allowing collectors to explore foreign cultures through beautifully illustrated figures.

The lithograph is enhanced by delicate hand-coloring, with restrained blues, whites, and earth tones emphasizing the rustic simplicity of the subject. Fine linework and subtle shading create depth and texture while maintaining the elegant simplicity typical of mid-nineteenth-century costume illustration. The broad margins and uncluttered composition make the print highly decorative and especially suitable for framing.

The print is an original antique lithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
