Muleteers and Aymara dancers in "Perou", an original hand-colored engraving from the French travel series Voyage autour du Monde et Naufrages célèbres, published in France around 1840. The lettering beneath the image gives the title "Perou." with the captions "Arrieros" and "Danse d'Indiens Aymaras", and the series title appears at the lower right.
The two scenes share one landscape. At the left stand two arrieros, the muleteers who carried goods across the Andes: one in a conical hat and gray cloak with his arms folded, the other in a black hat, red vest, green breeches and pink sash, holding a switch. At the right the Aymara dancers play pipes and drums. Three wear tall, balloon-shaped headdresses striped in blue, red and yellow and topped with feather plumes, and a woman in a broad hat, blue skirt and embroidered bodice raises a long spear hung with a cloth. Wild plants and rocks fill the foreground, and pale hills lie in the distance.
The series gathered costume and travel scenes from many countries in one illustrated publication, and this plate is an early French view of festival dress in the Andes.
