A cheese seller of Lima and a woman from the countryside around the city, an original hand-colored lithograph of about 1841 drawn by Pierre Blanchard. The plate is lettered "Marchande de Fromages de Lima" under the figure at the left and "Indienne des environs de Lima" under the figure at the right, with a note at the upper left naming the voyage atlas from which it comes.
The cheese seller is seen from behind, in a straw hat, with her hair in a long braid, a blue dress, a dark overskirt and a woven belt, and she holds out a flat tray of cheeses at her side. The woman at the right faces the viewer, wearing a tall dark hat with a green underside, a blue dress with a yellow collar, a black apron and a pink shawl over her arm. Each stands on a small patch of ground, and the rest of the sheet is left bare.
Plates of this kind in French voyage atlases showed the dress and the trades of the places visited, and Lima's street sellers were a favorite subject.
