Antique Dutch architectural print of the monument to Vice-Admiral Koopman in the cemetery at Utrecht, designed by L. H. Eberson, an uncoloured lithograph in warm sepia tones from J. H. Leliman's album, 1865 to 1866.

The plate is captioned 'Monument ter gedachtenis van den vice-admiraal Koopman, op het kerkhof te Utrecht' (monument to the memory of Vice-Admiral Koopman, at the cemetery in Utrecht). Unlike the domestic and commercial designs elsewhere in the album, it is a single large view: a tall, stepped funerary monument in a plain classicising idiom, its die faced with a carved heraldic shield above crossed naval emblems, an anchor and a cannon barrel bound with laurel, and a circular medallion, the whole raised on a moulded plinth within a low chain-link fence carried on cast posts.

The monument stands against a dense screen of evergreens, cypress and fir, drawn in soft, atmospheric lithographic wash under a lightly clouded sky, and a single gentleman in a frock coat to the right confirms its considerable height. The sheet is worked in warm sepia tones without printed colour, closer to a wash drawing than to the harder line of the villas and public buildings in the volume, which suits its commemorative purpose. No plan, section or scale accompanies the view, and the inscriptions on the die are indicated but not transcribed.

This antique architectural lithograph comes from the third part of the 'Album van bouwkundige schetsen'. Jan Hendrik Leliman (1828 to 1910), an Amsterdam architect and a founder of the architects' society Architectura et Amicitia, edited the album, gathering in it his own designs and those of fellow Dutch architects. The architect's name and plate number 8 head the sheet, Leliman's credit runs lower left and the imprint of the lithographer S. Lankhout of The Hague lower right. Its quiet, atmospheric image would suit a library or study, and it will interest collectors of naval history and anyone connected with Utrecht.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light toning, a few small spots, faint creases at the upper edge and in the upper and lower left corners, and minor edge wear. Please see the images for further detail.
