Bulgarian Man in Traditional Dress Antique Costume Lithograph, c.1852

Description:

This vivid nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Bulgaar,” or Bulgarian man, portrayed in richly detailed traditional attire characteristic of the Balkan regions of Bulgaria. The figure stands barefoot and confidently posed, wearing loose garments, an embroidered vest, patterned headwear, and carrying a curved knife tucked into a broad sash, reflecting the strong regional identities and distinctive costume traditions of southeastern Europe during the nineteenth century.

The image embodies the romantic European fascination with the peoples of the Balkans and the Ottoman frontier regions. During this period, costume studies and ethnographic lithographs became highly popular among collectors, travelers, and publishers eager to document the varied dress and customs of Europe’s many cultures. Bulgarian costume in particular was admired for its bold colors, layered textiles, and practical yet decorative forms rooted in rural and pastoral traditions.

The lithograph is especially attractive for its restrained yet effective hand-coloring. Deep reds, blacks, and soft blues animate the garments while preserving the fine engraved and lithographic linework beneath. The striped sleeve, embroidered trim, and textured fabrics are rendered with notable care, while the curved blade and traditional sash add an unmistakable Balkan character to the composition.

The large blank margins and uncluttered background place full emphasis on the figure itself, allowing the costume and pose to dominate the composition. Such prints were intended not only as educational illustrations but also as decorative works suitable for albums, portfolios, and framed interior displays.

The print is an original antique lithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.

Condition: Age-related toning and occasional minor spotting to the paper, with light edge wear consistent with age. Overall in good condition with attractive original hand-coloring and generous margins.

Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut, rustic black, or lightly gilt frame with a warm ivory or parchment-toned mat. Excellent for Balkan, Ottoman, or Grand Tour inspired interiors and especially attractive when grouped with other nineteenth-century costume studies.

Technique: Original hand-colored lithograph
