This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows two women in a grassy landscape. The woman at the left sits on a rock in a green headscarf patterned in red, a white blouse with yellow and red at the shoulders, a crimson bodice and a full gray skirt. The woman at the right stands in a yellow turban, a pink shawl and a long white robe with yellow trim, blue stockings and yellow slippers, working yarn that runs down to a ball on the ground. The lower image shows a man seated on a stone holding a long gun in both hands. He wears a red cap over long curls, a blue vest over yellow sleeves, a crimson sash and cloak, a full white kilt and red slippers, and in the distance beyond him lie a walled town with a minaret, a small boat on the water and a range of gray mountains.
The lettering reads "Tom 132" at the top left (lettered "Tom" where the other plates read "Tav"), "GRECIA" at the center and "Tom IV" at the top right. Under the upper image: "Donna di Chios" (woman of Chios) and "Donna di Micone" (woman of Mykonos). The lower caption reads "Uomo di Maina" (man of Maina).
Chios and Mykonos are islands of the Aegean, and Micone is the Italian name of Mykonos. Maina, the Mani, is the rugged central peninsula of the southern Peloponnese, long known for the independence of its people.
A colorful piece for a room inspired by Greece and the islands.
Condition: Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
