This original antique lithograph, hand colored, is from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four figures on a grassy path. At left a woman of Baden in a cap with a red pompom, white kerchief, dark jacket and black skirt over red holds a round straw hat; beside her three Hamburg servants, one in a white cap, yellow shawl and purple sleeves with a handkerchief, one in a lace cap, red shawl, green bodice and white apron with a basket on her arm, and a man in a white cap with a red band, a gray double breasted coat, cravat, long white apron and buckled shoes, whose arm she holds. The lower image shows Hamburg market people: a woman in a straw hat and red skirt seated on a basket, a man in a black hat and red jacket with a yoke and hanging baskets, a man in a gray coat carrying a tray of goods and holding his hat, a woman in a straw hat with a basket of flowers, and a seated woman in a pink striped skirt with baskets of fish at her feet.
The top margin is lettered "Tom IV", "GERMANIA" and "Tav 73". The upper captions read "Donna di Baden" (Woman of Baden) and "Domestici Amburghesi" (Hamburg servants). The lower caption reads "Contadini Amburghesi. Vendᵉ di frutta inzʳᵉ. Giardinᵃ e Pescivendola" (Hamburg country people, fruit seller, garden woman and fishwife).
Hamburg, the great port on the Elbe, drew its daily supply of fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish from the surrounding countryside and the river, and its street sellers were a favorite subject of costume books. Baden lies in the southwest of Germany.
The busy market group and the clear captions make this a lively sheet for a collection of German or market subjects.
Condition: Light wear to the top right corner. Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
