This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four figures on grass. At the left a woman in a flowered straw hat, green bodice and striped apron carries a basket, beside a man in a flowered straw hat, long brown coat, blue breeches, red garters and red shoes, leaning on a staff. At the right a man in a broad black hat, pink waistcoat and black breeches walks arm in arm with a woman in a yellow hat, red bodice, white sleeves and blue apron. The lower image is set before a gray mountain. An old white bearded man sits at the left holding his hat, beside a young woman in a flowered yellow straw hat, red bodice and white sleeves holding a basket. At the right a milk seller in a yellow straw hat over a white headcloth, yellow jacket and blue trousers carries a wooden vessel on his back and a bowl in his hands, and wears sandals.

The lettering reads "Tav. 60" at the top left, "SVIZZERA" at the center and "Tom. IV" at the top right. The upper caption reads "Costᵉ Svizzero nel Canton di Zug. Conjugi contⁱ nel Canton Sciafusa" (Swiss costume in the canton of Zug; a peasant couple in the canton of Schaffhausen). The lower caption reads "Vecchio e Contadinella di Solura. Vendi-Latte di Glavis" (old man and peasant girl of Solura; milk seller of Glavis).

Zug and Schaffhausen are Swiss cantons, and "Sciafusa" is an Italian form of the name Schaffhausen. The plate gives a lively picture of the straw hats, laced bodices and full sleeves of Swiss country dress.

A cheerful piece for a chalet, a kitchen or a collection of Alpine subjects.

Condition: Light handling wear to the bottom right corner; minor nicks along the right edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
