Spanish American man from Mexico, an original hand-colored lithograph of about 1852 from a nineteenth-century costume series in Dutch. The plate is lettered "Spaansch Amerikaan uit Mexico" (a Spanish American from Mexico) in small capitals beneath the figure.
The figure stands full length against the blank paper, in a tall black pointed hat with a yellow ribbon, an embroidered jacket with slashed sleeves, a yellow sash at the waist, and grey trousers worn with soft boots. A heavy striped blanket, in red, brown and ochre, hangs from one shoulder as a cloak. In his hand he holds a long pole with a forked iron tip. The color is applied by hand in deep blacks, warm ochres, reds and muted blues over the lithographed outline.
Plates of this kind presented the dress of different peoples to a European public. The large margins leave the single figure alone on the sheet.
