This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows three figures in a grassy field: a woman in a frilled white cap, ruffled collar, pink bodice, white apron and blue skirt, a black hat hanging from her arm; a young man in a black hat, wide ruffled collar, brown jacket and brown breeches with banded stockings, holding a long staff; and a woman in a white head cloth tied with yellow ribbons, a dark sleeveless jacket and long white apron over a lilac skirt. The lower image shows a woman with a basket on her back, a ruffled collar and a green skirt under a lilac coat; beside her a woman in a long blue gray coat and white veil, a large bundle on her head and a flask hanging from her hand. At the right a man in a brown cap, brown jacket, sash and white trousers stands with his hand on his chest, a long musket beside him.
The top margin is lettered "Tom IV." at the left, "IMP. AUSTRIACO" in the center and "Tav 102" at the right. The caption under the upper image begins "Slavi e" (Slavs and), followed by a second word that is weakly and irregularly printed on the sheet. The caption under the lower image reads "Liburni" (Liburnians).
Liburnia is the old name for the coast around the Kvarner Gulf in present-day Croatia, which in 1842 belonged to the Austrian Empire, the state named in the heading of this plate.
Condition: Age toning; handling soiling along the edges and foxing with some brown staining in the margins. Printed image clean.
