Title: Set of Six Antique French Medieval Costume Prints by F. Roy, circa 1860

Description:

A decorative and historically interesting set of six original antique French costume plates illustrating noble, royal and civilian dress from the Middle Ages.

These plates originate from the French series Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles, published in Paris by F. Roy and conceived as a visual survey of French civil and military dress across the centuries. The costumes were reconstructed from medieval manuscripts, architectural sculpture and other historical sources.

Each engraving is enhanced with original hand colouring. The figures are shown in richly detailed period clothing, including royal robes, court dress, noble costume, civilian attire and the clothing of a medieval page and troubadour.

The set consists of the following six plates:

1. Varlet, Seigneurs en Costumes de Chambre et de Ville

A servant and two noblemen wearing domestic and town costumes based on miniatures dating from approximately 1360 to 1365. Plate No. 17.

2. Noble Capétienne, vers 1180 à 1190

A noblewoman of the Capetian period wearing a long blue gown, red mantle and decorated headdress. Plate No. 19.

3. Reine Capétienne en 1360

A Capetian queen in royal medieval costume, based on a figure from the portal of Chartres Cathedral. Plate No. 20.

4. Page et Troubadour au XIIIe Siècle

A thirteenth-century page and troubadour, including a musician holding a medieval harp. Based on imagery from the manuscript of the Miracles of Saint Louis. Plate No. 21.

5. Dame Noble

A medieval noblewoman in an elaborate fur-trimmed mantle and richly decorated court costume dating from the reign of Charles V, circa 1364. Plate No. 24.

6. Bourgeoise sous Charles VI, en 1382

A French bourgeois woman in civilian dress from the reign of Charles VI, dated 1382. Plate No. 29.

The combination of medieval fashion, French history and vivid hand colouring makes this group especially suitable for a library, study, dressing room, fashion-related interior or traditional French-inspired setting.

These are genuine antique prints published circa 1860. They are not modern reproductions.
