Pacific Island Ethnography, Canoe, Architecture & Costume, Antique Print c.1890

This detailed ethnographic engraving documents aspects of daily life, material culture, and technology of Pacific Island societies, as recorded by European scholars in the late 19th century. The plate was published as Tafel XVII in Volume I of the Internationales Archiv für Ethnographie, a German academic journal devoted to comparative anthropology and ethnology.

The composition brings together multiple observational studies on a single sheet, reflecting the period’s systematic approach to documenting non-European cultures. At the center is a large thatched communal structure raised on stilts, accessed by a narrow wooden walkway. The architecture is shown in elevation and context, emphasizing construction techniques adapted to tropical environments.

Flanking the central scene are male and female figures depicted in traditional dress, adorned with jewelry and body ornaments. Their postures and accessories provide insight into costume, social identity, and bodily adornment. Additional studies include palm and hand markings, possibly illustrating scarification or symbolic line patterns, as well as long ceremonial or utilitarian tools rendered at full scale.

The lower portion of the plate features a finely observed sailing canoe with raised prow and stern, rigged sails, and crew at work. This nautical scene highlights indigenous maritime technology and navigation traditions central to island life. Each element is numbered and arranged for reference to accompanying scholarly text, reinforcing the plate’s original educational purpose.

Produced for an academic audience and issued in limited circulation, plates from the Internationales Archiv für Ethnographie are increasingly scarce. Today they are valued for their historical significance, ethnographic content, and visual richness. This example is especially appealing due to the breadth of subjects shown on a single sheet, making it suitable for collectors of anthropology, Pacific history, maritime culture, and colonial-era scientific illustration, as well as for refined interior display.

Condition report:

Framing tips:

This print presents best in a museum-style setting. Use a warm off-white or soft ivory mat to complement the aged paper tone, paired with a medium-dark walnut or ebonized wood frame for contrast. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand color and paper.
