Femme de Puebla (Mexique), an original hand-colored print from the costume series Costumes Modernes, published in Paris by the Ancienne Maison Aubert. The sheet is lettered "Amérique N°10" at the top and "Femme de Puebla (Mexique)" below the image, and was issued c.1850.
A young woman stands against a stone wall, looking out of the print, one hand resting on the wall and holding a small red fruit or ball. She wears a dark-fringed shawl over her head and shoulders, a white blouse with a red and white embroidered neckline, a red sash and a pale blue skirt with a wide embroidered border of gold and red scrolls above a lace hem. She wears blue slippers. The dress is a fine example of the regional costume of the city of Puebla, and the coloring is applied with a delicate hand.
The series presented the dress of the peoples of the world to a French audience, and this plate belongs to the American section.
