This is an original antique copper engraving with hand coloring, numbered "N°. 24" above the image and titled in Dutch "Eene Noord-Hollandsche Dame in haar binnen-Vertrek." A young woman sits on a lyre backed chair with a red seat, reading a small book. She wears a pale gray high waisted gown with puffed sleeves, a deep lace collar and a long lace veil over a close cap with gold ornaments at the temples, with a coral necklace, yellow gloves in her lap and gold slippers. Behind her a large gilt framed mirror reflects the back of her headdress, and on the table beside her lie a red shawl, a white shawl worked with flowers and a pink bonnet trimmed with white plumes. The floor is pink and the wall has a green dado with a gold wave scroll.
The lettering below the image reads "H. Greven del." at the left and "v.d. Meulen sculp." at the right. The Dutch caption, "Eene Noord-Hollandsche Dame in haar binnen-Vertrek.", translates as: A North Holland lady in her inner room. The French text alongside reads "Une Nord-Hollandaise dans son Salon." (A North Holland woman in her drawing room). The imprint reads "Amsterdam, by E. Maaskamp, Nieuwendyk, N°. 251."
The plate belongs to Afbeeldingen van de Kleedingen, Zeden en Gewoonten in Holland, published in Amsterdam by Evert Maaskamp with every caption given in both Dutch and French. The series records the regional dress of the northern Netherlands in small scenes of everyday life, drawn by several artists, among them L. Seidel and H. Greven, and engraved for Maaskamp. The earlier plates of the series are lettered 1811; this one carries Maaskamp's later address on the Nieuwendyk and no year, and is dated circa 1820. Most plates of the series show figures out of doors; this one is set in a furnished room.
The plate can be framed on its own or hung with other plates from the series.
Condition: Wide margins with light, even age toning; a few small spots in the margins.
