An original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows two Neapolitan women on a stone step, one seated in a pink jacket and green skirt, the other standing with her arm on her shoulder in a blue head cloth, yellow gown and white apron, with a sailing boat, a waterfront town and a mountain across the bay behind them; to the right a barefoot fisherman in a red cap, white shirt, red sash and striped blue breeches rests his hand on a net, beside a boatman in a red cap and long green coat smoking a pipe. The lower image shows a countryman in a long brown cloak, blue coat and laced sandals passing a wayside shrine with a veiled statue and a basin, his hat in his hand, and a peasant woman in a checked head cloth, pink jacket, white apron and blue skirt with a basket of lemons talking to a porter in a yellow cap and striped trousers who smokes a pipe and leans on a wooden board.
The top margin is lettered "Tav. 53", "ITALIA" and "Tom. IV". Under the upper image: "Napoletane" (Neapolitan women) and "Pescatore e Barcajuolo di Napoli" (Fisherman and boatman of Naples). Under the lower image: "Contadino di Napoli · Contadina e Facchino di Napoli" (Countryman of Naples. Peasant woman and porter of Naples).
Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies when this volume was published.
The bright reds, blues and greens make this a cheerful plate for a kitchen or a seaside room.
Condition: Light wear to the bottom left corner. Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
