This is an original antique copper engraving with hand coloring, numbered "N°. 23" above the image and titled in Dutch "Doopsgezinde Kamper-Eilanders, op weg naar de Vermaning, by een opkomend onweder." A bearded man in a broad brimmed hat, a long gray coat with yellow fastenings, gray breeches and stockings and dark shoes leads a young woman by the hand past a wooden field gate, a staff in his other hand. She wears a lace cap over a flowered under cap with gold ear ornaments, a coral necklace, a white collar embroidered with flowers, a brown bodice with a brightly flowered front, a checked waistband, a full pleated blue skirt, pale blue stockings and buckled shoes. She carries a straw hat, and a small clasped book hangs from a chain at her waist.
The lettering below the image reads "L. Seidel del." at the left and "V.d. Meulen sculp." at the right. The Dutch caption, "Doopsgezinde Kamper-Eilanders, op weg naar de Vermaning, by een opkomend onweder. De donder bromt Gods naam ter eere!", translates as: Mennonites of Kampereiland on the way to the meeting house as a thunderstorm rises; "The thunder rumbles the name of God to his honor!" The French text alongside reads "Mennonites de l'île de Campen, Se rendant à l'office religieux, à l'approche d'un orage. Il publie aux mortels la gloire du Très-Haut." (Mennonites of the island of Kampen going to the religious service at the approach of a storm; it proclaims to mortals the glory of the Most High). The imprint reads "Amsterdam, by E. Maaskamp, Nieuwendyk N°. 251."
The plate belongs to Afbeeldingen van de Kleedingen, Zeden en Gewoonten in Holland, published in Amsterdam by Evert Maaskamp with every caption given in both Dutch and French. The series records the regional dress of the northern Netherlands in small scenes of everyday life, drawn by several artists, among them L. Seidel and H. Greven, and engraved for Maaskamp. The earlier plates of the series are lettered 1811; this one carries Maaskamp's later address on the Nieuwendyk and no year, and is dated circa 1820. Kampereiland is the river island near Kampen, at the mouth of the IJssel.
Condition: Wide margins with light, even age toning; a few small spots in the margins.
