This is an original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows two men on a path in open green country. The man at the left, with a long mustache, wears a tall cylindrical yellow cap, a blue jacket over a yellow embroidered waistcoat, a crimson sash, full green trousers gathered below the knee, white stockings and red slippers, one hand held out. The man at the right wears a tall gray cap, a crimson jacket under a long yellow embroidered vest, full blue trousers and red slippers, and carries a wooden staff over his shoulder. The lower image shows two more men. At the left a man in a red and white striped turban wears a long green coat open over a crimson robe and striped full trousers. At the right a bearded man in a white and blue turban wears a violet jacket over a green waistcoat, a yellow and white sash and full blue trousers, his hands at his sides.
The plate is lettered "Tom IV" at the upper left, "TURCHIA EUROPEA" in the center and "Tav 127" at the upper right. The upper caption reads "Caramanesi" (people of Karaman), and the lower caption reads "Costumi d' Ardana" (costumes of Ardana).
Karaman is a city and region in south central Anatolia, once the seat of the Karamanid principality before its absorption into the Ottoman Empire.
The clear blues, greens and crimsons make a handsome pair of panels for a hallway or a study.
Condition: Light wear to the bottom right and top left corners. Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
