Antique Hand-Colored Engraving “Nieuw-Zeelanders” (Maori), Early 19th Century

A beautifully hand-colored ethnographic engraving depicting three Māori figures of New Zealand, titled “Nieuw-Zeelanders.” The scene presents a richly detailed portrayal of traditional Māori dress and ornaments. The standing figure is wrapped in a feathered cloak and holds a taiaha-style weapon, while the woman beside him carries a woven basket and wears carved adornments. A seated figure in a flax rain cape completes the group, adding depth and narrative to the composition.

This engraving reflects early European encounters with Māori culture and likely originates from a 19th-century publication documenting the indigenous peoples of the Pacific. The soft color palette, accurate rendering of garments, and detailed moko facial markings highlight both the artistry and ethnographic intent of the work.

A fine addition for collectors of Pacific cultural history, exploration-era prints, or early anthropological illustration. Suitable for museum or gallery display, particularly focused on Oceania, seafaring exploration, or colonial-era printed works.

Very good condition for age. Light toning to margins. Minor handling marks and faint foxing in border areas, not affecting image. Center image is clean and richly colored.
