An original antique print, a copper engraving colored by hand, lettered "Habit of Madamoisselle de Chartres, Daughter to the Duke of Orleans, in 1700." A young woman in a tall lace headdress with a long veil and a pearl choker holds an open fan in one hand and extends the other, gloved, toward the viewer's left. Her bodice is blue with gold lacing and lace ruffles at the sleeves. The skirt is built up in tiers of cream and pale blue, trimmed with gold fringe and scattered flowers, and a jeweled girdle with tassels and a purple bow sits at her waist. A crimson mantle bordered in white and sprigged with gold sweeps out behind her into a train at the viewer's right.

Two lines of lettering run below the figure. The English title, in a flowing script, reads "Habit of Madamoisselle de Chartres, Daughter to the Duke of Orleans, in 1700." The French caption beneath it reads "Mademoiselle de Chartres", and the number 133 is engraved at lower right. The English title spells the name "Madamoisselle", with a long s, while the French caption gives the usual "Mademoiselle". The plate carries no engraver or designer credit.

Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, published A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern from his premises in the Strand, London, and this plate is from the second volume, dated 1757 on its title page. The title page credits the designs to Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar and others, and a French title, Recueil des Habillements de Différentes Nations, accounts for the bilingual lettering. It falls among the French figures of the volume. The year in the English title is the date of the costume shown, not of the print, which was published in 1757.

A cream or ivory mat brings out the hand coloring against the plain paper.

Condition: Light handling wear to the bottom left corner; edges straight and without nicks. Light, uneven toning, soiled along all four edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin.
