Laplander in Traditional Dress, Hand-Coloured Lithograph, c.1845
This lithograph depicts a Laplander (Sámi figure) dressed for a cold northern climate, wearing layered garments and distinctive headwear. The figure stands prominently against a sparse background, underscoring the harsh environment associated with northern Scandinavia.
Published in Wahlen’s encyclopaedic costume work, the plate reflects contemporary European curiosity about remote cultures. Duverger’s rendering is direct and observational, with hand colouring used sparingly to accent form and fabric.
The result is both an ethnographic document and a striking decorative image, particularly appealing to collectors interested in Nordic history.
