Indigenous dress and interior in South America, a hand-colored aquatint with etched outlines by D. K. Bonatti, from Giulio Ferrario's Il Costume Antico e Moderno, published in Milan, dated 1821. The plate is signed "D. K. Bonatti inc." at the lower right.

Two men stand and sit on a stepped brick floor at the corner of a covered room. Both wear striped wraps around the waist, and the seated man, with a band around his head, holds his hand out in conversation while the standing one, with a cord in his fingers, listens. Behind them hangs a row of leather straps and stirrup-like loops on the wall, and at the right a spotted hide and a bunch of dark feathers lean against the post. A woman in a hood looks on from behind a half wall at the left.

Ferrario's survey of the costumes of the world ran to 17 volumes in its first issue, from about 1815 to 1826, and the American volumes took their material from travelers and naturalists.
