This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows a long haired, mustached man in a red cap, blue jacket and green trousers seated cross legged on the ground playing a long necked lute; facing him a man in a blue and white striped turban, green shirt and brown sleeveless coat sits on a low bank smoking a very long pipe whose bowl rests smoking on the ground, one slipper kicked off before him. In the lower image a young woman sits on a striped cushion braiding her long hair, dressed in a loose white robe with broad bands of color; at the right a woman in a tall white headdress, white veil and lilac robe bordered in gold holds up a small burning lamp, a tall slender stand beside her.
The top margin is lettered "Tav. 134" at the left, "GRECIA" in the center and "Tom IV" at the right. The captions under the upper image read "Marinaro Greco" (Greek sailor) and "Abitante di Tessaglia" (inhabitant of Thessaly). The captions under the lower image read "Donna dell' Isola Cassos" (woman of the island of Kasos) and "Donna di Missolungi" (woman of Missolonghi).
Thessaly is a region of central Greece that remained under Ottoman rule until 1881. Kasos is a small island in the southeastern Aegean near Karpathos, and Missolonghi is a town in western Greece, known for its sieges during the Greek War of Independence.
Condition: Light handling wear to the top left corner; minor nicks along the right edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
