Grand Master of the Teutonic Order: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving in Ceremonial Robes
This exquisite hand-colored engraving, titled "Hochmeister des deutschen Ordens" (Grand Master of the Teutonic Order), showcases the ceremonial attire of the Order’s leader. The Grand Master is depicted in an opulent ensemble, wearing a red and blue embroidered coat beneath a white ceremonial mantle adorned with the iconic black cross of the Teutonic Order. His confident stance, with one hand extended and the other resting near his sword, conveys both authority and chivalric honor.
This artwork is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan’s acclaimed series, "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," or "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. The series provides a detailed visual account of the ceremonial dress of European knightly orders, reflecting the grandeur and traditions of these institutions. The Teutonic Order, established during the Crusades, was a Catholic military and religious order renowned for its significant role in medieval European history.
The engraving’s vibrant hand-coloring enhances the intricate details of the Grand Master’s attire, making it an excellent collector’s piece for enthusiasts of heraldry, historical costume, or medieval chivalric orders. It serves as a beautiful representation of the pageantry and historical significance of the Teutonic Order.
