This is an original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows a wedding group of Fribourg. In the center a young man in a black hat trimmed with yellow and a spray of flowers wears a brown coat, a pink waistcoat edged in black, a red sash and full white breeches. A young woman in a white cap banded in red, white blouse, black apron and red skirt leans her head on his shoulder, and at the right an older woman in a dark cap with a ruff, a dark jacket, a red skirt and a long lace trimmed band looks on. The lower image shows a meal outdoors by a lake with hills beyond. A woman in a small dark cap serves a dish, a man in a broad black hat leans on a white clothed table with a bottle, a glass and a cake, and a figure in a tall crown shaped headdress patterned with red hearts, long red ribbons, a dark jacket and red stockings sits on a bench beside him. A basket rests on the ground.
The plate is lettered "Tom. IV" at the upper left, "SVIZZERA" in the center and "Tav. 63" at the upper right. The upper caption reads "Abito nuziale dei Friburghesi" (wedding dress of the people of Fribourg), and the lower caption reads "Sposi del Cantone di Sciaffusa" (bride and groom of the canton of Schaffhausen).
Fribourg and Schaffhausen are Swiss cantons, Fribourg in the west of the country and Schaffhausen on the Rhine in the north.
The warm reds and the lake setting make this a cheerful plate for a dining room or a gift for a couple.
Condition: Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
