This original antique lithograph, colored by hand, is a plate from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). In the upper image three figures stand before a village with a church spire: at left a woman in a white cap, a yellow jacket printed with red flowers, a white apron and blue skirt, carrying a basket; in the center a stout man in a tall black hat, a brown cape trimmed with dark fur, lavender coat, yellow breeches and white stockings, leaning on a cane; at right a woman in a conical straw hat with a long ribbon, a green shawl, white apron and yellow skirt, with a basket on her arm. The lower image is a beach scene: tall sailing vessels drawn up on the sand, horse drawn carts and people at work among baskets and a barrel, a group of women and fishermen at right, and a church tower on the dunes at left under a purple gray sky.
The top margin is lettered "Tav. 82" at left, "BEGLIO ED OLANDA" in the center (as printed, for Belgio) and "Tom. IV" at right. The upper captions read "Donna Olandese." (Dutch woman) and "Uomo e donna di Sveninga" (Man and woman of Scheveningen), and the lower one "Sveninga" (Scheveningen).
Scheveningen is the fishing village on the North Sea coast beside The Hague. Its flat bottomed boats were run up onto the open beach, where the catch was unloaded and carted away, as the lower image shows.
The lively beach scene gives this plate wide appeal for anyone with a connection to Holland or the sea.
Condition: Light handling wear to the bottom right corner; minor nicks along the right edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
