An original antique print, a copper engraving colored by hand, lettered "Habit of the Duke of Burgundy, in 1700." A young man in a full curled wig and lace cravat stands with one hand stretched out toward the viewer's left, holding a pair of gloves. His long light blue coat is cut with deep cuffs and set with rows of gold buttons, and a red ribbon crosses his chest from the shoulder. A deep pink sash is knotted at his waist, and a lilac shoulder knot with gold fringe hangs at the viewer's right. A sword blade shows below the skirt of his coat, and he wears pale stockings and dark buckled shoes.

The English title is engraved in script beneath the image: "Habit of the Duke of Burgundy, in 1700." Below it is the French caption "Duc de Bourgogne." (in English, "Duke of Burgundy"), and the plate number 130 is engraved at lower right. No engraver or designer is named on the plate.

Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, published A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern from his premises in the Strand, London, and this plate is from the second volume, dated 1757 on its title page. The title page credits the designs to Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar and others, and a French title, Recueil des Habillements de Différentes Nations, accounts for the bilingual lettering. It falls among the French figures of the volume. The Duke of Burgundy in 1700 was Louis, grandson of Louis XIV and father of Louis XV. The year in the English title is the date of the costume shown, not of the print, which was published in 1757.

The single figure on a plain ground suits a simple mount and a narrow frame, and it hangs well beside other plates from the same series.

Condition: Light handling wear to the bottom left corner; edges straight and without nicks. Light, uneven toning, lightly soiled along the bottom, left, right and top edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin.
