This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four figures on grassy ground: a man in a round black hat, dark green coat, yellow waistcoat and dark breeches leaning on a staff, beside a woman in a long white hooded veil and white apron over a red bordered skirt; a boatman smoking a pipe, with a shaggy fleece over his shoulders, a red waistcoat and striped trousers, carrying a basket; and a man in a tricorn, green coat and white breeches with a large sack on his back and a vessel in his hand. The lower image shows a young man in a pink cap and green jacket holding a sickle and a sheaf, a woman in a black hat and dark bodice with a flowered apron and a basket of greens, and a man in a black hat and long red coat over a yellow striped waistcoat, carrying a hoe on his shoulder.
The top margin is lettered "Tav 14" at the left, "SPAGNA" in the center and "Tom IV" at the right. The caption under the upper image reads "Uomo e donna borghesi di Minorca" (townsman and townswoman of Minorca), "Barcajuolo di Majorca" (boatman of Majorca) and "Vendi-olio" (oil seller). The caption under the lower image reads "Contadini e Giardiniere d' Ivica" (peasants and gardener of Ibiza).
Minorca, Majorca and Ibiza are the Balearic Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the western Mediterranean. Majorca, Minorca and Ivica are the older spellings used in Italian and English at the time; Ibiza is the modern form.
With seven full length figures in clear, strong color, the plate makes a lively single picture for a wall devoted to Spain or the Mediterranean islands.
Condition: Light handling wear to the top left and bottom left corners; minor nicks along the top edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
