The Order of Saint James, established in the 12th century, was originally a military order devoted to protecting pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela. The engraving is part of the series titled Illustrations of All Spiritual and Secular Orders (Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden), first published between 1779 and 1791. This monumental work by Christian Friedrich Schwan sought to catalog the rich diversity of chivalric orders across Europe, both religious and secular.
