A man in a wide hat and cape holding a lute, a hand-colored lithograph from the Album des Voyages Anciens et Modernes, published in 1854 by Martial Ardant Frères. The plate is lettered "Cincinnati" in script beneath the image, within a double-ruled border on wide cream margins.
The standing figure wears a grey wide-brimmed hat, a light blue jacket over a yellow waistcoat with a bow tie, white trousers, black shoes and a blue sash at the waist, with a brown cape hanging from his shoulders. He raises one hand and holds a lute or mandolin in the other. Behind him a small house and trees stand in a landscape of open grass, and a distant figure in a cloak walks along the path.
The caption names the American city, but the costume, the sash and the instrument read as a Spanish or Latin type rather than an Ohio one, so the plate is best understood as a costume figure in a French series of travel views rather than a portrait of the city's inhabitants. The color is carefully applied by hand over the lithograph.
