Chinese Mandarin in Winter Court Dress, Antique Print, Jefferys 1749

This refined mid-18th century engraving depicts a Chinese Mandarin in winter attire, illustrating the formal dress and rank of Qing dynasty officials as understood in Enlightenment-era Europe. Published in London in 1749 by Thomas Jefferys, the print belongs to a celebrated series documenting global costumes.

The figure is shown wearing a heavy fur-trimmed robe, layered over flowing garments, with a richly decorated chest panel indicating status. The subdued palette of browns, greens, and soft blues is enhanced by delicate hand coloring, giving warmth and depth to the composition.

Such prints were admired for their educational and decorative qualities, offering European audiences insight into distant cultures. Today they remain highly collectible for their historical and artistic significance.

Condition: Good condition with age-related toning and light spotting. Minor edge wear and small marginal losses. Plate mark visible.

Framing tips: A dark wood frame with a warm ivory mat enhances the richness of the tones and gives the piece a sophisticated presence.
