Bulgarian Man in Traditional Dress, Hand-Coloured Lithograph, c.1845

Description:

This lithograph portrays a Bulgarian man dressed in regional costume, complete with sash, headwear, and distinctive garments reflecting Ottoman-era Balkan influences. The figure is shown barefoot, reinforcing the ethnographic realism sought by Wahlen’s project.

Markaert’s careful draughtsmanship and restrained hand colouring give the image a balanced, dignified presence. The blank background enhances focus on costume and stance.

Condition report:

Scattered foxing; light toning; colours stable.

Framing tips:

A warm wood frame with a wide mat complements the earthy palette.

Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph

Maker: Markaert, Brussels, c.1845
