Durrani Afghan Warrior Print, Antique Hand-Colored Costume Lithograph

A striking and uncommon 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicting a Durrani tribesman or warrior from Afghanistan, published circa 1852. The figure is portrayed standing in richly patterned traditional dress while holding an elaborate long firearm, emphasizing both the military culture and ceremonial costume traditions associated with the historic Durrani people of Afghanistan.

The image combines ethnographic interest with refined artistic execution. The warrior wears a beautifully decorated robe with delicate floral motifs, contrasted by a deep blue outer cloak and yellow head covering. His long jezail-style rifle, a weapon strongly associated with Afghan warriors of the 18th and 19th centuries, adds further historical character and authenticity to the composition. European audiences of the period were fascinated by the peoples and cultures of Central Asia, and prints such as this were produced for illustrated travel accounts and ethnographic publications documenting distant regions and societies.

The restrained background focuses full attention on the dignified figure and his costume, creating a composition that is both decorative and historically evocative. The subtle hand-coloring remains attractive, with particularly rich blue tones and carefully highlighted details in the robe and weaponry. The large margins and elegant proportions make the print highly suitable for framing.

This lithograph would display beautifully in a study, library, global-inspired interior, or alongside collections of Orientalist and ethnographic prints. It pairs especially well with dark walnut or ebonized frames combined with warm ivory matting for a refined museum-style presentation.
