A woman and a man of Guatemala, an original hand-colored print from Auguste Wahlen's Moeurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde, published in 1843. The plate is lettered "Femme et Homme de Guatemala" beneath the image.
A tall woman fills the foreground in a loose, striped blouse-like wrap woven in red and blue bands over a full pale skirt, with a red headcloth, bead necklace, earrings, bracelets and leather sandals tied with cords. In the distance, drawn much smaller, a man in a broad straw hat stands in a long shaggy cloak over a white garment with a red sash. A cast shadow in orange and green washes marks the ground. The outlines are engraved and the color is applied by hand in transparent washes, with the engraver's signature at lower left.
The plate is one of the national costume views in Wahlen's compendium of the dress and customs of the world's peoples.
