A figure in the dress of the majo of Jerez, an original hand-colored print from Auguste Wahlen's Moeurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde, published in 1843. The plate is lettered "Majo de Jérez" with the added line "(Mexique.)" beneath the figure.
A single man stands in the foreground wearing a black wide-brimmed, pointed hat with a pompom, a short embroidered jacket with buttons and trim, a yellow sash at the waist, close-fitting trousers and leather boots. A striped serape in red, blue, yellow and green is draped over one shoulder, and he leans on a long staff or lance with a forked end. A tassel hangs from the cloak, and the engraver's signature is visible at the lower edge. The coloring is applied in clear washes over the engraved outline, and the sheet has a plain background with a little cast shadow at the feet.
The caption places the costume in Mexico, and the print belongs to the series of national costume plates that Wahlen issued in Brussels, in which each plate is labeled with its country.
