A woman of Lima in the veiled dress of the city, an original hand-colored print from Auguste Wahlen's Moeurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde, published in 1843. The plate is lettered "Femme de Lima" beneath the image.
The figure stands in profile with her head and shoulders wrapped in a dark blue mantle that covers the face except for one eye, a style of dress associated with Lima in the nineteenth century. Below it she wears a white apron embroidered with flowers over a red underskirt, a yellow patterned skirt and red slippers, and a small hat lies on the ground at her feet. A second veiled figure is sketched in pale outline in the distance. The engraving is lightly shaded and the colors are applied by hand in washes, with a small signature letter at the lower left.
The sheet belongs to Wahlen's series of national costume views, in which each plate shows a typical figure of a city or people.
