A native of the Princess Marianne Strait, an original hand-colored print from Auguste Wahlen's Moeurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde, published in 1843. The plate is lettered "Naturel du Détroit Princesse Marianne" with the added line "(Océanie.)", which places the subject in Oceania.
A bearded man with long dark hair stands in shallow water holding a very long spear in one hand and a bundle of arrows and a bow in the other. He wears an armband, a belt with a shell ornament, and carries raised scar markings on the chest. Behind him a mangrove-like tree rises from the water. The engraving is lightly shaded and colored by hand in transparent washes.
The sheet belongs to Wahlen's series of national and tribal costume plates, in which each figure is captioned with its region.
