Antique Costume Print Mongol Kalmyk Warrior, Hand-Colored, 1854

A finely executed hand-colored ethnographic costume print depicting a Mongol or Kalmyk figure, titled “Mongoolsch Ölot of Kalmuk.” This striking composition presents a standing male figure in traditional attire, offering a rare and visually compelling European interpretation of Central Asian dress and identity during the 19th century.

The figure is shown in a confident stance, dressed in a deep blue robe adorned with subtle decorative motifs, cinched at the waist with a broad belt from which a sheathed sword is suspended. The garment’s wide collar and structured form suggest both practicality and status, while the rich hand coloring enhances the textile’s visual depth. His red leggings and shoes create a vivid contrast, drawing the eye downward and balancing the composition.

Particularly notable is the distinctive helmet, rendered with careful attention to form and texture, reflecting the martial culture associated with Mongol and Kalmyk groups. The subject’s facial features are delicately engraved, capturing a composed expression and lending the figure a sense of individuality rather than anonymity, an important aspect in ethnographic illustration of this period.

This print likely originates from a 19th-century European costume publication aimed at documenting global cultures, where accuracy was often blended with artistic interpretation. Such works were highly valued for their educational and decorative appeal, offering viewers insight into distant regions through carefully composed imagery.

The generous margins and warm, aged paper tone enhance its authenticity and decorative potential. As a standalone piece, it carries strong presence, but it would also pair exceptionally well with other costume prints from Asia or Central Asia in a curated wall arrangement.

Condition is good antique, with age-related toning, occasional light spotting, and minor wear along the edges. The sheet remains structurally sound with a pleasing overall patina.

For framing, an ebonized or dark walnut frame combined with a wide ivory mat will emphasize the rich colors while maintaining a refined, museum-quality presentation.
