A sheet of European and other costumes, an original steel engraving with hand color from Blatter fur Costumekunde, historical and folk costumes drawn from authentic sources, published by Franz Lipperheide in Berlin about 1875. The plate is numbered at the upper right, and the publisher's name is engraved at the foot.
The sheet gathers many figures and details on one page in no single setting. Across the top stand Greek and Eastern European figures in embroidered jackets, and a porter with a pole over his shoulder. In the middle, a medieval nobleman in a long red robe and cloak faces a woman in a laced bodice with a feathered cap and a sword, and a hand and two ears are drawn as separate studies. Along the bottom are crowns and caps, and a group of three veiled women in long skirts, which the old listing identifies as the costume of Peru.
Lipperheide founded his Berlin publishing house in 1865 and issued the fashion magazine Modenwelt, and his lifelong collection of costume books later became the basis of the Lipperheide costume library in Berlin.
