This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows a fishwife seated at the left among wicker baskets of fish with a kettle beside her, in a pink cap, green shawl and lavender skirt, reaching up to tug the coat of a citizen seen from behind in a brown coat, black hat and pale stockings. At the right a peasant couple: the woman in a broad straw bonnet tied with red ribbons, a yellow spotted jacket, a checked apron and a red striped skirt; the man in a broad brimmed hat, red waistcoat, long coat and blue breeches, carrying a basket. The lower image shows four gentlemen in top hats and a small boy. They wear tailcoats in blue, brown, green and gray over striped, checked and buff trousers, with bright waistcoats and neckcloths, three carrying canes. The boy, in a little top hat and a blue frock coat with a frilled collar, holds the hand of the man in checked trousers.
The lettering reads "Tom. IV" at the top left, "BEGLIO ED OLANDA" at the center and "Tav. 84" at the top right. Under the upper image: "Pescivendola e cittadino di Amsterdam" (fishwife and citizen of Amsterdam) and "Contadini di Gheldria" (peasants of Gelderland). The lower caption reads "Signori Inglesi" (English gentlemen).
Gelderland is a province in the east of the Netherlands. The heading joins Belgium and Holland, which had separated in 1830.
The contrast between Dutch working dress and English fashion makes it an engaging piece for a hallway or study.
Condition: Light handling wear to the bottom right corner; minor nicks along the right edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
