This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). In the upper image a bearded man in a gold turban, green jacket with crossed gold belts, a broad gold sash and wide olive trousers stands at the left, gesturing toward a map. In the center a white bearded man in a very tall yellow headdress and a long green robe lined with fur holds the open map, a sword at his side. At the right a younger man in a white turban and crimson robe, a white towel over his shoulder, carries a cup on a saucer. In the lower image a man in a tall white cap, olive cloak, pink sash and black and white striped trousers stretches out one arm; beside him a man in a tall yellow cap and crimson robe lined with white fur; and at the right an older man in a yellow cap crowned with a large gray plume, wearing a green fur trimmed robe.
The top margin is lettered "Tav 110" at the left, "EUROPA" in the center and "Tom IV" at the right. The captions under the upper image read "Bascià in guerra" (pasha in war) and "Bascià in pace, e suo Paggio" (pasha in peace, and his page). The captions under the lower image read "Paggio dell' Agà" (page of the Aga), "Agà" (Aga) and "Koul-Kehaya".
Pasha was a high Ottoman title held by provincial governors and senior commanders, and aga was a title of officers and household officials; Bascià and Agà are the Italian spellings of the time.
Six full length figures in rich reds, greens and golds make this a striking plate for a collection on the Ottoman world.
Condition: Age toning; handling soiling along the edges and foxing with some brown staining in the margins. Printed image clean.
