This is an original antique copper engraving with hand coloring, plate No. 21 of Maaskamp's series on Dutch dress and customs, captioned in Dutch "Een Vriesch en Groningsch Meisje." Two young women stand before a green painted bench. Both wear close fitting caps with gold ornaments at the temples, long white lace veils, gold earrings and coral necklaces. The left wears a pink bodice with puffed sleeves, long green gloves and a dark brown skirt with a small pattern, and carries a straw bag or hat tied with pink ribbon. The right wears a white high waisted gown and leans on the scrolled arm of the bench, holding a fringed sash.
The Dutch caption translates as "A Frisian and a Groningen girl." The French caption reads "Une jeune fille Frisonne et une de la Groningue.", that is, "A young Frisian girl and one from Groningen." Below the image the credits read "H. Langerveld ad viv. del." at lower left and "W. van Senus sculp." at lower right, naming H. Langerveld as the draughtsman working from life and W. van Senus as the engraver. The imprint reads "Amsterdam by E. Maaskamp, Kalverstraat & Dam No. 1" and carries no year, so the sheet itself cannot be dated precisely.
The plate belongs to Afbeeldingen van de Kleedingen, Zeden en Gewoonten in de Noordelijke Provinciën van het Koningrijk der Nederlanden, the survey of dress, manners and customs in the northern Netherlands published in Amsterdam by Evert Maaskamp, with a parallel French text. Each plate pairs its figures with a short exchange in Dutch, sometimes in regional dialect, and in French, so the costume studies also read as small genre scenes.
A single plate frames well on its own, and several from the series hang well together as a group.
Condition: Wide margins with light, even age toning; a few small spots in the margins; light handling wear to the corners.
